World Mental Health Day – Look Out For The Beauty Around Us

Written by Ian Collier.

"Cyclists see considerably more of this beautiful world than any other class of citizens. A good bicycle, well applied, will cure most ills this flesh is heir too."

Those were the sage words of 19th Century New Yorker and bicycling evangelist Dr KK Doty.

And, as we mark World Mental Health Day, they are all the more poignant.

It was established in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health whose founding document declared "the ultimate goal of mental health is to help people live with their fellows in one world”.

Taken literally, Dr Doty’s words create visions of cycling through stunning countryside, mountain passes or woodland gravel trails.

But seeing kindness, helping and understanding others, and showing empathy can be just as beautiful.

So, while you’re out on the bike this weekend, keep an eye out for the beauty around you.

And maybe stop and offer a fellow cyclist help to change an inner tube; or let the driver off a close pass and put it down to a momentary lapse.

Because these things make a difference.

As pictured below, cycling friend Mark Williamson, director of our chosen charity Action for Happiness, will attest to the fact that generosity and kindness not only helps others, it's also great for our wellbeing too.

You can also take a look back at AFH’s Ten Keys to Happiness, and how cycling can help people achieve these.

And in the meantime – we hope you have a beautiful weekend!
