The Surrey Hills have many a hidden gem, recently our colleague Jess went exploring and found the Lovelace bridges.
Back in 1860 (a favourite year for us) Lord Lovelace, an enthusiastic forester, had tracks constructed with gentle inclines to facilitate the transport of timber in the very hilly woods to the south of Horsley Towers. This involved the construction of embankments over small valleys and crossing tracks were bridged. The bridges were usually horseshoe shaped, fifteen in all, of which ten remain.
Starting and ending at Newlands Corner White Lane Car Park, Jess has created this route so you too can explore the bridges and the stunning surrounding area. She highly recommends an en-route stop at the AllezNutrition Sports Café at the top of Staple Lane/Coombe Lane (open on weekends 8:30 - 16:30).
